Obituary of Marie Wiitanen Hancock Marie W. Wiitanen, 88, a resident of Hancock passed away Sunday morning November 18, 2012, at home following a lengthy illness. She was born on September 13, 1924, in Painesdale, MI, a daughter of the late James and Albina (Gereau) Mitchell. As a child, she moved with her family to Hancock where she graduated from the Hancock High School with the class of 1942. On January 19, 1946, she was united in marriage to Arthur "Flash" Wiitanen. In 1946 the couple moved to make their home on Minnesota St. in the house Art had built for the couple to live. On September 4, 2003, Art preceded Marie in death. Marie was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, where she was active with the Altar Society. She was a member of the Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock Auxiliary for over 40 years, she had also belonged to the XYZ Club and St. Anne's Society. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking and playing cards. Preceding her in death were her husband Arthur, her parents, her sister Claire Adams and her brothers Jim and Joseph Mitchell. Surviving are: Her daughter: Sharon (Walt) Kusnier of Dexter, MI Her grandchildren: Jeff (Kelly) Kusnier & Laura Coleman Her great grandchildren: Kyle Kusnier, Tyler Kusnier, Emma Kusnier, Nyah Coleman and Noah Coleman. Her sister: Gladys Olson of Hancock Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. A Mass of Christian burial for Marie will be held 11 am Tuesday November 20, 2012, at the Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church in Hancock with Fr. Brian Gerber to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton. Friends may call on Tuesday November 20, 2012, from 10 am until time of mass at the church.
