Obituary of Martha Hakala Hancock Martha M. Hakala, 91, a resident of Hancock passed away Tuesday evening January 6, 2015, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past three years. She was born on April 1, 1923, in Hancock, a daughter of the late John and Aliina (Wendell) Luoma. Martha was a graduate of Hancock High School with the class of 1941. Following high school, Martha worked for the Book Concern Printers in Hancock until she was united in marriage to Nestor Luhti in 1946. Nestor preceded her in death in 1969. Martha then worked as a cook for Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock, retiring in 1988. In October of 1989, she was united in marriage to Henry "Hank" Hakala and in August of 2006, he preceded her in death. Martha was a faithful lifelong member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. She was active with the Suomi Kerho, the Order of Runneberg Lodge #8 of Dollar Bay, the VFW Post #6507 Auxiliary of Chassell and the Marine Corp League Auxiliary. Martha and Hank were very active with Little Brothers friends of the Elderly. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, her sister Aiina Luoma, and her brothers; Waino, William, Edward and Michael; special loved ones, Rose & Robert Kari and JoAnn & Jim Geogeon. DJ Rasner to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock. Friends may call on Saturday January 10, 2015, from 12 noon until time of services at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock.
