Obituary of Mathias Ruohomiemi HANCOCK ? Rev. Mathias R. Ruohoniemi, 88, retired minister of the L.C.A. and a former resident of Calumet, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where he had been a resident patient since May 13, 1996. Prior to that, he resided with his sister, Hilda Ruohoniemi on Jasberg Street in Hancock. He was born in Franklin Township on January 4, 1916, a son of the late Matt and Maria (Peltohaka) Ruohoniemi. He later resided in Houghton, Clouquet, Minn., Eveleth, Minn., Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Calumet, and then in Hancock. He was a graduate of the Houghton High school, attended the former Suomi College and then the former Suomi Seminary. He was united in marriage to the former Martha Kananen and she preceded him in death on October 20, 1990. The couple served congregations at Clouquet, Minn. from 1940-42, Eveleth, Gilbert, Palo and Biwabik, Minn. from 1942 until 1963 and then served a short time in Sault Ste. Marie and Rudyard, Mich., the couple also served in Kaleva, MI from 1963-78. After they retired, they made their home on Lakeshore Drive, Calumet, until he moved to be with his sister in 1991. Matt was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock. Surviving are a son, John P. (Linda) Ruohoniemi of Rhinelander, Wis. and Calumet; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Sigrid Lassila, a resident patient at Woodhaven Nursing Wing at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 10, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock with Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. Burial to be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. The Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock is serving the family.
