Obituary of Matt Alfred Kokko Pelkie/Arheim Matt A. Kokko, 91, a resident of DesRochers Rd., Pelkie/Arnheim, passed away Tuesday August 12, 2008, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born on October 29, 1916, in South Range, a son of the late Matt L. and Hilda (Kinnunen) Kokko. As a child, Matt attended the South Range Schools and then when his family moved to Quincy Hill in 1930 he attended the Pewabic and then the Hancock Schools. Mr. Kokko had first worked with Civilian Conservation Corp. He then owned his own coal delivery business. Later he worked as a carpenter & millwright for various construction companies locally and in Waukegan, IL. Mr. Kokko was a veteran having served with the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. Matt was united in marriage to the former Hilja Tuttle. For the past 45 years they have made their home in Arnheim, where Matt had built a home for them to live. Mr. Kokko enjoyed carpentry work & being outdoors especially fishing & hunting. Preceding him in death were his parents and sisters: Lyyli Miller, Eva Eskelainen, Louise Kolehmainen, and Lenore Jurgensen and his brothers: George, Karl, Henry, David, & Paul Surviving are: His wife Hilja of Arnheim His sisters: Anita (Donald) Lilquist of Ishpeming Nancy (Thomas) Olson of Hancock Several nieces, nephews, and cousins A private graveside service for Matt will be held at the Mt. View Cemetery of South Range with Rev. Ted Koehl to officiate. The Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
