Matthew C. Farrell

January 19, 1970 — September 18, 2025

Hancock

Matthew C. Farrell, 55, a beloved father, son, coach and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, September 18, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on January 19, 1970, in Laurium, MI, Matt was the son of Craig and Kathy (Koopikka) Farrell. He grew up in Hancock, where he made lifelong memories with family and friends, and had the opportunity to live in Minnesota and New Hampshire before returning to the place he always considered home. He graduated from Hancock High School in 1988 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he played baseball and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Matt later graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Matt was the proud father of two children, Morgan and Kade, from a previous marriage to Stephaine Anderson. He will be remembered for his deep love for them and the joy they brought him.

Matt's love for baseball was more than just a hobby, it was a life-long passion. He was a dedicated coach for many years, spending a significant portion of his career as the head baseball coach and later head softball coach at Finlandia University, where he mentored and inspired countless young athletes. His leadership on the field and his commitment to the players made him a beloved figure in the local sports community. His devotion to sports, and to helping others grow both as athletes and as people, was something that defined him.

He later became an Academic Advisor for Post University, where he was known for his caring and thoughtful approach with students.

Outside of his professional life, he was an avid Minnesota sports fan and enjoyed playing baseball in the local twilight league for many years. He also cherished camping, boating, and spending time with his close-knit group of friends. Whether it was a weekend on the water or a summer camping trip, Matt's energy and humor were a constant source of joy for those around him.

Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents: Eugene and Lois Farrell, and Matt and Irene Koopikka.

He leaves behind his children, Morgan (Bronson) Wood of New Hope, MN and Kade Farrell of Houghton, MI; his parents, Craig (Barb) Farrell of Mesquite, NV, and Kathy Farrell of Hancock, MI; his aunts and many cousins, and a circle of friends who will forever remember him for his loyalty, generosity, and the light he brought into their lives.
