Obituary of Michael Greenleaf Dollar Bay Michael "Mose" Greenleaf passed away at the Omega House in Houghton on Sunday evening following a short illness.Mose was born in Houghton on May 4, 1916, to Bridget and George Greenleaf, the third of six children. Mose was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Parish and attended St. Ignatius School through the eighth grade at which time he transferred to Houghton High School from which he was a graduate.Mose later met the love of his life, Evelyn Smith of Dollar Bay. The couple was married in March of 1936. They made their home in Dollar Bay where they raised ten children.Mose served with the Merchant Marines, now the Coast Guard, during World War II serving on several Liberty Ships. Upon the discharge from the Merchant Marines, he spent the better part of 35 years as a Great Lakes Seaman serving on various freighters throughout the years.Mose was a member of the Keweenaw Antique Auto Club for years and won many awards for his restoration of several antique cars. In later years, his automobiles became a mainstay of the 4th of July parades in Dollar Bay for the past 20 plus years.Preceding Mose in death were his parents, two sisters, Mary and Berdine, and one brother Joe. Also preceding him in death was his wife of 64 years, Evelyn and 2 daughters, Pamela Steinacker and Therese Blissett. He is survived by 4 sons, Terrence (Patricia) of Whitewater, WI, Jerome (Barbara) of Hancock, Michael (Dolly) of Roanoke, VA, and Thomas of Dollar Bay. Four daughters also survive, Sharon (Edward) Heikkila of Calumet, Merrilee Greenleaf of Dollar Bay, Rose (Jim) Bronczyk of Dollar Bay and Connie (David Massoglia) Greenleaf of Hancock. He leaves 20 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild, a sister Ann Gregorich of Rockford, IL and a brother Jim of San Francisco, CA, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and friends, including special friends Goldie Mattfolk, Paul Sawyer, Butch Gariepy and Tom Thorton and his constant companion, Tillie, his cat.A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 am Saturday January 24, 2009, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton with Fr. Raymond Vallerio to celebrate. Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.Friends may call on Friday January 23, 2009, from 4 to 8 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock where s parish prayer service will be held at 7 pm and on Saturday January 24, 2009 from 10 am until time of services at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton.
