Obituary of Miriam "Mary" Ruth Rajala
Sturgeon River Miriam “Mary” R. Rajala, 94, a resident of Sturgeon River, Chassell, passed away Tuesday morning April 18, 2017, at the Light House in Hancock, following a short illness. She was born on November 22, 1922, in Dollar Bay, a daughter of the late Ivar and Elizabeth (Manninen) Juntunen. As a child, she attended the Dollar Bay Schools. On February 21, 1942, she was united in marriage to Oliver Rajala. The couple moved to Sturgeon River where they raised three children. In May of 1997, Oliver preceded Mary in death. Mary was a long time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell where she was active with the quilters of the church. She enjoyed cooking, baking, working in the garden, reading books, working crossword puzzles, playing scrabble with her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling and thoroughly enjoyed going to Finland, Sweden and Norway with her grandson’s family at the age of 92. She also looked forward each week for Wednesday Senior lunches with friends in Chassell. Also preceding her in death were her siblings, Karl, Elsie, Urho, Martha and Bertha. Surviving are: Her children: Sharon (Chuck) Rocchi of Dollar Bay George (Diane Morris) Rajala of Sturgeon River Bonnie (Jay) Richmond of Trenary Her grandchildren: Joe Rocchi, Paula Fenton, Cort Rajala, Megan Woods, Adam Rajala, Danielle Kareus and Heidi Gleason 17 grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren (She was very proud of the five generations of her family)Special niece Betty Mercier and the Rivest nephews that visited her oftenHer dear neighbors & caregivers, Richard & Jean Bezotte of Sturgeon RiverHer dear friends: Katie Komula of Chassell Betty Komula of North Carolina Numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins Funeral services for Mary will be held 12 noon Saturday April 22, 2017, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell with Rev. Joe Iverson to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton. Friends may call on Saturday April 22, 2017, from 11 am until time of services at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials be given the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly or the charity of one’s choice in memory of Mary.
