Obituary of Nadine Janke St. Mary's Location Nadine (Robert) Janke, 82, a resident of St. Mary's Location, passed away Thursday March 16, 2006, at the Omega House in Houghton where she had been a resident patient for the past 6 months. She was born on January 7, 1924, in McKinley, TX a daughter of the late Otis and Corrine (Ashley) Key. Nadine has resided in Texas, and the Detroit area, where she attended and graduated from Wayne State University. In 1944, she was united in marriage to Robert Janke and the couple has resided in the Copper Country for over 58 years. For a short time they lived in Boulder Colorado. Mrs. Janke had worked briefly as a Medical Technologist and continued her interest in health care by volunteering at the Portage Health Systems Hospital for years. Nadine was a dear friend of Portage Lake United Church in Houghton. She was very active with the Girl Scouts of America for over 25 years, having helped to recruit girl scouts and girl scout leader, she was formerly Vice President of the U.P. Council of Girl Scouts, and had helped to establish the Girl Scout Camp Blueberry Knoll. Nadine also loved Isle Royale having spent 45 summers at the Park. She was a member of the Isle Royale Natural History Association where she served as Chairman of the Board. She loved to weave and teach others the skill of weaving, along with working on different crafts. She also enjoyed working with the Family Community Education Group. Gardening, cooking, baking, painting with water color paints, bird watching, and arranging wild flowers were some of the hobbies Nadine also took pleasure in. Nadine also belonged to Aqua Fit and enjoyed Folk Dancing. She was preceded in death by her parents, and 1 Brother: Andrew "Bud" Key Surviving are: Her husband: Robert A. Janke of St. Mary's Location 4 Children: David (Jackie) Janke of Pueblo, CO Daniel (Patricia) Janke of East Grosse Pointe Shores, MI Steven Janke of Indianapolis, IN Janet (Ernest) Letson of Ishpeming, MI 7 Grandchildren: Stuart, Sherri, Aaron, Sarah, Christopher, Kevin, and Jeremy 4 Great Grandchildren: Jaden, Ashton, Taylor, Caleb 2 Step-Grandchildren: Jim & Jeff Several nieces, nephews, and cousins A memorial service for Nadine will be held 3 p.m. this Monday March 20, 2006, in the Portage Lake United Church of Houghton, with Rev. Victoria Bethel to officiate. Friends may call on Monday from 1p.m. until time of services at the church. The family suggests memorials be given to The Omega House in lieu of flowers.
