Obituary of Peter Houle ChassellPeter Houle, 76, a resident of Chassell passed away Sunday evening March 14, 2010, at his home, following a battle with cancer.He was born on September 16, 1933, in Hancock a son of the late Philip and Kathleen (Grace) Houle. Pete was a graduate of the Hancock High School with the class of 1952.Mr. Houle was a veteran having served with the United States Navy and Naval Resers for 42 years. Retiring as CHEIF MACHINIST MATE.On August 9, 1958 he was united in marriage to the former Marlene Sormunen at St. Joseph's St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Hancock. Together, they have resided in Chassell since that time. In 2006, the couple was recognized as Citizens of the Year in Chassell at the annual Chassell Lion's Club Strawberry Festival.Peter was first employed with his father at Phil's Upholstery in Hancock. In 1966, he started working at Michigan Technological University, retiring as a Physical Plant Supervisor in 1988.Mr. Houle was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church of Chassell where he was a member of Saint Michael the Archangel Council #13224 Knights of Columbus, Chassell. He was active with the Chassell Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief for 17 years. Pete was also a member of the VFW Post #6507 of Chassell, Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock, and the Fleet Reserve Association.Mr. Houle was an avid outdoorsman enjoying his free time hunting, fishing, spending time at "Da Camp" and in the summer taking his boat "The Shamrock" to Isle Royale and Keweenaw Bay.
