Obituary of Ralph Erland Jurmu Houghton Ralph E. Jurmu, 88, a former resident of Houghton passed away early Saturday morning September 29, 2007, at the Omega House in Houghton following a lengthy illness. He was born on November 16, 1918, in Dollar Bay, a son of the late Matt and Katherine (Savela) Jurmu. As a child, he attended and graduated from the Dollar Bay Schools. Ralph has also resided in Chicago and Detroit. In 1973, he retired and moved back to Dollar Bay and for the last 10 years he has made his home in Houghton. On July 5, 1947, he was united in marriage to the former Jean Matero and she preceded him in death on July 30, 1985. Mr. Jurmu was a veteran having served with the United States Army during World War II. While residing in Detroit, he worked as a truck driver for National Cylinder & Gas Company. Ralph enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at Agate Beach and following the Detroit Tigers baseball team. Also preceding him in death was a grandson, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Surviving are: His children: Marcia ( Charles ) Weideman of Warren, MI Donna ( James) Ayotte of Harrison, MI Michael (Sharon) Jurmu of Dollar Bay, MI 5 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren Several nieces, nephews, and cousins A graveside service for Ralph will be held 2 p.m. Thursday October 4, 2007, at the Mt. View Cemetery in South Range with Rev. Dean Franz to officiate. The Copper Country Veterans Association will hold military rites following the graveside services at the cemetery.
