Obituary of Raymond L. "Rayka" Luoto Painesdale Raymond L. Rayka Luoto, 96, a resident of Painesdale, passed away Tuesday evening December 22, 2015, at his home. He was born on September 23, 1919, in Painesdale, MI, a son of the late George and Mary (Sivonen) Luoto. As a child, he attended the Jeffers Schools. Rayka worked for the White Pine Mining Company, Hamar and Quant and on the Great Lakes Ore Boats before returning to White Pine Copper Mines where he retired from in 1982. Mr. Luoto was a veteran having served with the United States Army during World War II. On January 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Isaacson, and on January 15, 2012, she preceded him in death. Rayka was active and athletic his entire life. He was proud to tell of the times when he played goalie for the Portage Lake Pioneers when they had won the Gibson Cup in 1951-52. More recently he was an avid golfer until this past year being able to spend his summers on the golf course. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and woodworking projects. Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, his sister Lucille Pakkala, his son Richard Podner and his grandson Brandon Podner. Surviving are: His children: Steven (Lee) Luoto of Chassell Christine (Fred) Vezzetti of Metamora, MI Cathy (Don) Fox of Manistique, MI Susan Luoto of Prescott, MI Billy (Dawn) Podner of Ishpeming 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren His sister: Gladys Schutz of Houghton Several nieces, nephews and cousins A time to remember Rayka will be held 11 am Monday December 28, 2015, at the Rangers Post #6165 VFW of South Range.
