Obituary of Raymond Maki ChassellRaymond A. Maki, 83, a resident of Lakeshore Dr., Chassell, passed away early Friday morning March 13, 2009, at the Omega House in Houghton where he had been a resident patient for the past 5 daysHe was born on December 23, 1925, in Toivola, a son of the late Albin and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Wuorinen) Maki. Ray was a graduate of Jeffers High School with the class of 1944.Mr. Maki was a veteran having served with the United States Army in the 10th Mt. Division in Italy during World War II. After the service, Ray attended Barber College in the Detroit area. He then returned to the Copper Country and began a career that lasted over 40 years working in South Range, Houghton, Hancock and Chassell as a barber. Mr. Maki also was a school bus driver for the Chassell Schools and owned and operated the Sylrene Cottages in Chassell for over 40 years, and also was a former Sheriff's Deputy for the Toivola area.On July 23, 1960 he was united in marriage to the former Jean Heikkinen.Mr. Maki was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell, he was a life member of Rangers Post #6165 V.F.W. of South Range and was a member of the Michigan & Florida Barbers Association. Ray enjoyed the outdoors hunting and fishing, traveling with Jean, spending time with his grandchildren, and bowling in his younger years.Preceding him in death were his parents, two infant brothers and a sister Mildred Kallioinen.Surviving are: His loving wife Jean Maki of Chassell; His children: Kim (Anita) Maki of Chassell, Karen (James) McInnis of Chelsea, MI; His grandchildren: Nathan, Rylee, Kyle, Briah, Krista, His brother: Robert (Ruth) Maki of Superior Location; His sisters: Helen (Don Kolhemainen) Salani of Hancock, Shirley Allen of West Palm Beach, FL, Nancy (John) Stemberger of Brookfield, WI, Loraine Widmark of Mill Valley, CA; Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; He will be sadly missed by all his family & friends.Funeral services for Ray will be held 3 pm Monday March 16, 2009, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell with Rev. Elmer Liimatta to officiate. Following Ray's service Ranger's Post #6165 V.F.W. of South Range will have Military rites at the church.Friends may call on Monday March 16, 2009 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell from 1 to 3 pm.Ray's family would like to thank the staff of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the care given to Ray while he was a patient for the past three years, along with the staff of Portage Health for their care given to Ray and also to the staff of the Omega House in Houghton for their care given to Ray and the family during his stay.In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorial may be given to the Omega House in Houghton in memory of Raymond A. Maki.
