Obituary of Richard Garnell HANCOCK Richard A. Garnell, 95, of Hancock, a resident of Houghton County Medical Care Facility since 2009, passed away Thursday evening February 17, 2011. Richard was born on December 19, 1915 in Houghton Canal a son to the late Alex and Hannah (Juntunen) Garnell. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock. Richard worked as a farmer most of his life. He also worked at the Quincy Smelter and Portage Hospital. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and telling stories of the good old days. He was united in marriage to Irene Kangas on October 11, 1952. She preceded him in death on January 23,1973. Richard was later united in marriage to Loretto Halgren on November 18, 1978. She preceded him in death on September 12, 2005. Preceding him in death were his parents, brother, Rudolph, an infant brother, sisters, Helmi Koski, Edna Lampinen and Nancy Korpela and also a step-son Doug Halgren. Richard is survived by one daughter, Suzanna (Robert) Tuomi of Chassell, four sons Howard of Martinez, GA; William of Hancock; Louis (Kaye) of Dodgeville and Jay (Barb) Garnell of Chassell; 23 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, one sister, Florence Garnell of Beverly Hills, MI; and step-children, Carole Harris, Stan Roberts both of Hancock and Diane Hendrickson of St. Charles, MI., along with step-grandchildren. Also Richard will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock with Pastor Gerry Southerton to officiate. Visitation will be held Monday, February 21st, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock and also one hour prior to services on Tuesday, at the church. Spring burial will be in the Oskar Cemetery. Richard's family would like to thank the Staff of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the care and compassion shown during Richards stay.
