Obituary of Richard James Madison Houghton Richard J. Madison, 83, a resident of the Bluffs Senior Living Community passed away Monday December 28, 2015, at the Omega House in Houghton. He was born on August 21, 1932, in St. Ignace, MI, a son of the late Burton and Margaret (Schlehuber) Madison. Richard was a graduate of the St. Ignace High School. He also graduated from Michigan Technological University with a degree in Forestry and received a teaching certificate from Northern Michigan University. Mr. Madison was a veteran having served with the United States Army. He had worked as a Forester for the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon and retired from Upper Peninsula Power Company as the Supervisor of High Line Construction. Richard was a faithful member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton. He was a very active outdoorsman throughout the year, biking, kayaking, canoeing, cross country skiing and marathon running. He was very proud to have joined Leonard Oikarianen and Rudy Larson in the early 70s to cross country ski across the Upper Peninsula. He also joined his brother Jay in 1965 to help row for Clancy Kalmer as he swam the length of the Portage Lake Canal. In 1971, he also was one of the first four racers in the now annual race around Mackinaw Island on Labor Day, where thousands compete. Richard also had a very close association with his family and friends. His kind and generous ways will be missed. Surviving are: His brother: Jay (Terri) Madison of DeQuincy, LA His nieces and their families: LiAna and Lara Also all of the many friends and acquaintances he made during his stay at the Bluffs Senior Living Community A Mass of Christian Burial for Richard was held 12 noon Thursday December 31, 2015, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton where Fr. John Martignon officiated. Visitation was held 10 am until time of mass at the church on Thursday. Spring burial will be held in the Gors Cap Cemetery of Gros Cap, MI.
