Rita Peterson

Obituary of Rita Peterson Chassell Rita J. (Bishop) Peterson passed away peacefully at the Omega House in Houghton on September 9, 2012 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Chassell in 1923 to Albert and Bertha (Fish) Bishop. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Lesley (Elynore) Bishop and John (Berenice) Bishop. Rita attended St. Ignatius School, Houghton High School and Suomi College. During World War II she worked as a stenographer for the Navy in Detroit. She returned to the Copper Country and married Robert J. Peterson in September of 1945. They moved to Lansing and Detroit, where they raised their family. Rita is survived by her husband, Robert; her sister, Ethel Bishop; her four children, Terry Peterson, Michael (Diane) Peterson, Barbara Zackal and Nancy Wilson; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and twenty one nieces and nephews. The funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 15, at St. Anne Church in Chassell. The family will receive friends before Mass from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Lunch will follow the Mass.
