Robert Kinnunen

Obituary of Robert Kinnunen Chassell Robert L. Kinnunen, 93, a former resident of Chassell passed away Tuesday afternoon December 4, 2012, at the Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where he had been a resident since this past March. He was born on June 19, 1919, in Keweenaw Bay, a son of the late Matt and Anna (Niemela) Kinnunen. Robert was raised in the Keweenaw Bay area and attended the Keweenaw Bay School. Mr. Kinnunen was a veteran having served with the United States Army during World War II. In April of 1947, he was united in marriage to the former Irene Olgren. The couple moved to make their home in the Snake River Hill area. Irene preceded Robert in death in March of 1989. Mr. Kinnunen was a heavy equipment mechanic, working for Axel Koski in Keweenaw Bay, and then Drott Tracker Company before retiring from Hocking Contracting. Bob enjoyed carpentry projects, time outdoors fishing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and going for car rides. Also preceding him in death were his wife, his sisters; Helen Simula, Esther Pyykkonen, Martha Hanshaw, and his brothers, Arthur, John, Ruben, and his twin brother Wesley. Kinnunen of Chassell His nephews: Donald (Arlene) Simula of Keweenaw Bay Lowell (Barbara) Hanshaw of L'Anse His nieces: Betty (Robert) Braun of Menasha, WI Barbara Funk of Menasha, WI Sharon Ferris of Milwaukee, WI Donna Breno of Amherst, OH Janet (Richard) Pelto of Marquette Cousin: Paul (Dottie) Kinnun Several great nieces, great nephews, and other cousins. A memorial service for Robert will be held 11 am Saturday June 22, 2013 at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell. Burial was in the Chassell Cemetery. Friends may caal on Saturday June 22, 2013, from 10 am until time of services at the funeral home. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to the Alzheimer's Society.
