Obituary of Robert William Saari
HoughtonRobert W. Saari, 84, a resident of Houghton passed away early Monday morning at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where he had been a resident patient for the past five years.He was born on January 15, 1931, in Hancock, a son of the late Olaf and Elizabeth (Harry) Saari. Robert was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the class of 1949. Mr. Saari was a veteran having joined the United States Air Force shortly after graduation.In 1951 he was united in marriage to the former Doris Mannikko of Ontonagon, MI. Robert had worked for the White Pine Copper Mine as a Driller-Blaster for several years. He then moved to Houghton where he worked for Gundlach Contracting until his retirement. During that time he was proud to have been able to say that he had worked for the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, Poland and Romania.Bob enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, painting plaster crafts, and working on wood projects.He was an active member of the F.O.E. #382 for over 40 years where he held the office of President for many years as well as many other chairs during his membership.Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers; Douglas, Ronald and baby Frederick.Surviving are: His wife; Doris Saari of HoughtonHis children: Robert Saari Jeri (Bill) GroenwaldHis grandchildren: Deyna (Anthony Shorts) SaariChad (Lauren Grey) KolehmainenHeather (Adam) McLaneDJ TonyanHis great grandson: AJ ShortsHis sister: Joyce Tolksdorf of HoughtonNumerous nieces, nephews and cousinsAs requested, a graveside service for Robert will be held at a later time in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.Robert's family would like to thank the staff of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for care given during his stay.To view Robert's obituary or to send condolences to the family please visit www.memorialchapel.net.The Memorial Chapel & Plowe Funeral Homes have been assisting the family with the arrangements.Service Information
