Obituary of Roland William Kyllonen Hancock Roland W."Rollie" Kyllonen, 78, a resident of Hancock, passed away Saturday morning October 26, 2013, at the Omega House in Houghton following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 5, 1935, in Atlantic Mine, MI, a son of the late Leo and Hannah (Jackola) Kyllonen. Rollie was raised in Onnela and was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the class of 1953. Following high school, he worked as a mechanic for Orman Lampinen and drove bus for the Stanton Schools. He then opened an auto repair garage in Hancock with his brother Kenneth until he accepted a mechanic position for the city of Hancock Public Works Department. Rollie continued to work for the City of Hancock Public Works Department until his retirement in 1996 as the Director of Public Works. In 1959, he was united in marriage to the former Ruth Ylitalo. Mr. Kyllonen was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, where he presently served as an usher and was a former council member of the church. He was also active in the community, serving on the Houghton County Multi-Recreation Board for many years and helped coach junior hockey when his sons were playing. Rollie was always active working on golf carts and helping thaw frozen water lines in the winter. He also was an avid bowler and golfer. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother and sister-in-law; Kenneth & Doris Kyllonen, his infant brother George and his infant sister Helen. Surviving are: His wife: Ruth Kyllonen of Hancock His sons: Roger (Patty) Kyllonen of Houghton Russell (Lisa) Kyllonen of Dollar Bay His grandchildren: Nichole (Brady) McCloskey, Vicky Kyllonen, Melissa (Craig Mayworm) Kyllonen and Isaac (Carla Connor) Kyllonen His great grandchildren: Anthony, Kazimir, Aelah and Adrianna Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Rollie will be held 12 noon Tuesday October 29, 2013, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. D.J. Rasner to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock. Friends may call on Tuesday October 29, 2013, from 10 am until time of services at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock.
