Obituary of Ruth Best Chassell Ruth E. Best, 91, a resident of US 41 Chassell passed away Thursday evening November 12, 2009, at the Portage Hospital in Hancock where she had been a patient for the past two days. She was born on January 18, 1918, in Walhalla, North Dakota, a daughter of the late Kittel and Carrie (Boe) Nordby. She attended high school in Fargo. As a young adult she moved to Lake Linden, MI, where she married Lawrence Best on March 22, 1942. Together the couple resided in Lake Linden until moving in 1961 to make their home on US 41 Chassell. Mrs. Best was employed by Michigan Technological University at Wadsworth Hall dining services, retiring after 10 years. Ruth was a member of Saints Peter & Paul Lutheran Church of Houghton. She was a 4-H Leader for many years, was active with the Home Extension and the Association for Family and Community Education for over 50 years, and volunteered for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly and Habitat for Humanity. She was active with the Houghton County Historical Society and Houghton County Fair Board. She received the Home Maker of the Year award at the county fair on five separate occasions. In 2004 the award was named the Ruth Best Homemaker of the Year award, in her honor. Ruth enjoyed gardening, golfing, cross country skiing, cooking and sewing. Preceding her in death were a young daughter, Karen Sue, her husband, her parents, and seven brothers and sisters. Surviving are: Her children: Jean (Truman) Guard of Fraser, MI Doris (Ron) Dion of Burr Ridge, IL Howard (Edith) Best of Hancock Bobbie (Dan) Dalquist of Hancock 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren Her brother: Chuck (Anna) Nordby Her sister: Delores Gresinger Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Ruth will be held 11 am Monday November 16, 2009, at Saints Peter & Paul Lutheran Church of Houghton with Rev. David Weber to officiate. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Lake Linden. Friends may call on Monday November 16, 2009, from 10 am until time of services at the church. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family requests memorials to Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church bell tower fund.
