Ruth Florence Loraine Salo

Hancock

Ruth Salo, 90, a resident of Hancock passed away Monday, April 24, 2023, at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, SD, of Gastric Volvulus, with many family and friends by her side.  Ruth had gone to South Dakota to be with her son as her health was declining.

   Ruth was born on September 7, 1932, on the family farm on the Houghton Canal.  She was the 2^nd of 7 children to Jacob and Fannie (Finni) Knuuttila.  She graduated from Houghton High School.  Ruth met John Salo and they wed on November 25, 1953, and had 4 children together: Debbie, Steve, Alan and Marsha.  While raising their children, Ruth was a homemaker and later worked at the Copper Crown Motel in Hancock, MI.

Grandma/Ruth was known to spend her extra time visiting her dear family and friends.  She loved to knit and was active with 4H.  She loved her Finnish heritage and speaking Finn.

Ruth is survived by her children: Debbie Salo of Mesquite, NV, Steve Salo of Chassell, Alan (Mary Jane) Salo of Bryant, SD and Marsha (Buster Anttila) Salo of Calumet; Her siblings Rachel Heikkinen, Robert (Lois) Knuuttila and Regina (Dave) Juntti.  Her 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews other family members, her special coffee friends along with many friends.

  Ruth is preceded into death by her loving husband John in 1990; siblings Raymond Knuuttila, Reynold Knuuttila and Rose Hillstrom.

A funeral service for Ruth will be held 11 am Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Mark Halonen to officiate.  Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.

Friends may call on Monday, May 1, 2023, from 6 to 8:00 pm at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and on Tuesday from 10 am until time of services at the church.
