Hancock

Ruth J. Lucier, 89, of Hancock, Michigan, passed away Sunday, August 23, at the Omega House in Houghton, with her family by her side. She was born July 6, 1937, in Hancock, Michigan, the daughter of the late Arvid and Ida (Saviluoto) Anderson.

Ruth was born and raised in Hancock and was the youngest of 11 children. She graduated from Hancock High School and furthered her education at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing.

In addition to being an amazing wife, mother and grandmother, Ruth was a talented artist. She participated in gallery exhibitions, including having a show of her own sponsored by Detroit and Northern Savings Bank. Her artistic mediums included watercolor, oil painting, acrylic and pencil drawing. Nothing intimidated her in the artistic world. She tackled stained glass, beadwork, knitting and many other creative pursuits.

Ruth supported her husband’s coaching career and spent many hours sitting on the cold bleachers at Hubbell Field and at the Dee Stadium. She treated his players as her own, and many of them continued to return to visit her throughout the years. Her generosity was immense. She made everyone feel at home. No one left hungry, and she was truly a kind soul.

Survivors include her loving husband of 67 years, William; her son Mark (Melinda); her son Gerald; her daughter Kristen (Joel Ciucci); three grandchildren, Sydney, William and Elizabeth; her daughter-in-law, Paula; one brother, Arne Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Robbyn Lucier; her grandson, Little Ger; five brothers, Paul, Carl, Harold, Walter and Donald; and four sisters, Irene Blunt, Sarah Jennings, Esther Butler and Ellen Kaiponen.

The family would like to thank the countless medical professionals who helped Ruth on her journey, as well as the caring staff at the Beacon House in Marquette and the Omega House in Houghton.

A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock or the “Ruth and Bill Lucier Endowed Football Scholarship” at Michigan Tech.
