Ruth Manninen

Chassell Ruth Irene (Laine) Manninen, 87, died July 7, 2016, at U.P. Health – Portage Hospital after a brief hospital stay. Ruth was born April 24, 1929, in Hancock, Mich., the seventh of 10 children of John and Fannie (Solmonson) Laine. She graduated in 1947 from Hancock High School. Ruth spent her early years working as a clerk at the Houghton County Courthouse. On Oct. 29, 1955, she married George Manninen of Tapiola and they enjoyed more than 60 years together. Ruth and George owned and operated Manninens Cabins on Otter Lake for more than 50 years and they were well loved by the tourists who frequented the resort. The Manninens split their time between Otter Lake in the summer months and Chassell in the winters. Ruth was active in the VFW Post 6507 Auxiliary and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell and enjoyed golfing, cooking and spending time with her dear friends and family. Ruth is survived by her husband George; daughter Dr. Cynthia (Don) Kring of Durango, Col.; daughter Christine Manninen of Chelsea, Mich.; sister Catherine Katri (Paul) Leach of Largo, Fla., and Hancock, Mich.; and sister Marjorie Zollinger of Pittsburgh, Pa. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings John Wesley, Viola, Gertrude, Reino, Armas, Helen and Betty.Ruth was the proud grandmother of Donald (Erin) Kring of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Molly Kring of Madison, Wis.; and Emily (Christopher) Obrist of Antigua, Guatemala. She was a great grandmother to Evelyn Ruth Kring, born in October 2015. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 11, at Memorial Chapel in Chassell from 4-7 p.m. The funeral will be 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Joe Iverson officiating. A graveside burial in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton will immediately follow the funeral and luncheon. Donations in Ruths memory can be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
