Obituary of Sandra Lee Henkel Pelkie Sandra L. (Jonathan) Henkel, 75, a resident of Pelkie, passed away June 8, 2017 in Petersburg Alaska while on vacation. She was born on October 13, 1941, in Bethlehem, PA, a daughter of the late Donald and Shirley (Beil) Taylor. Sandra was raised in the Bethlehem, PA, area and was a graduate of Muhlenberg College after which she was a French teacher. In 1969, she moved with her husband A. Barry Kunz to Champaign, IL where she founded and directed a daycare center that grew to 300 children. In 1985, she moved to Houghton where she worked as an administrative assistant at Michigan Technological University in both the offices of Academic Affairs and Educational Opportunity until retirement in 2009. On August 24, 1996, she was united in marriage to Jonathan Henkel. The couple has resided in Pelkie since that time. Sandra was a talented person that enjoyed sharing her gifts. She was one of the best instructors and active with the Husky Tae-Kwon-Do club, she was a past president and current treasurer of the Upper Peninsula Muzzle Loaders Association, she was a member of the Ottawa Sportsmans Club, a life member of Post #6507VFW Auxiliary of Chassell. She was an avid MTU Basketball fan, loved to hunt Elk in Colorado, fish in Alaska, sew, work in the flowers and vegetable gardens at home, and work with her bee hives. Sandra was preceded in death was her daughter Katherine Fisher and her brother Jack (Karen) Taylor. Surviving are: her husband: Jon Henkel of Pelkie and his sons Jonny (Karel) Henkel of Anchorage, AK and Scott (Chaya) Henkel of Kalamazoo, MI; son: Andrew (Laurie) Kunz of Wauwatosa, WI; grandchildren: Zoe, Alaina, Kaia, Stella, Taylor, Samantha, Lucinda, Christina, Jackson and Caden; sisters & brothers: Lynn (Bill) Lawson of Philadelphia, PA, Bonnie (Darryl) Smith of Souderton, PA, Brian (Linda) Taylor of Temperanceville, VA, and Gene (Nancy) Taylor of Doylestown, PA and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Sandy will be held 11 am Saturday June 17, 2017, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell with Rev. Julie Belew to officiate. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell where Post #6507VFW Auxiliary of Chassellwill hold a service at 6:45 pm, and on Saturday from 10 am until time of services at the funeral home, followed by a reception at the VFW post in Chassell. All are invited. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the VFW Womens Auxiliary of Chassell.
