Obituary of Sarah Mackrain Chassell Sarah Mackrain, 88, a former resident of Massie Road, Chassell, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the Lutheran Heritage Village in Livonia, where she had been a resident patient for the past 4 years. Sarah was born in Hancock, on October 22, 1914, a daughter of the late Edward & Lempi (Niiranen) Johnson, whom operated a 200 acre dairy farm in the Woodland District, near Calumet. In 1942, she was united in marriage to Oscar Peterson, and he preceded her in death. In February of 1973, she was united in marriage to William "Bill" Mackrain, and he preceded her in death on June 7, 1985. During their retirement years Sarah & Bill built a log home overlooking Chassell Bay. They completed all phases of construction, and began by cutting the trees themselves from Sarah's parents farm in Calumet. In December of 1983, their home was included in the "Holiday Tour of Homes." Before suffering a stroke in April of 1991, Sarah was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock. She was committee chair of weddings & funerals. She loved to cook and her skills were many. She was an artist. Her home featured many of her original paintings. She was also a seamstress. Brides & bridesmaids of numerous weddings displayed her handiwork. Often the wedding cake at their reception was made by Sarah, also. She was a member of the Chassell Extension Club and Copper Country Associated Artists. With a love of world travel her hobbies also included; golf, bowling, skiing, crocheting, knitting, & needlepoint. Also preceding her in death were 2 bothers; Peter & James Johnson. Survivng are; 3 Daughters; Mrs. Margaret (Ross) Fletcher of Baltimore,Md, Mrs. Patricia (Enzo) Becia of Anchorage, Alaska, Mrs. Sally (Jerry) Jablonski of Saginaw 3 Sons; John Mackrain of Keego Harbor, Charles Mackrain of Chassell, Thomas (Ruth) Mackrain of Chassell, numerous grandchildren 2 Sisters; Mrs. Marjorie (Mathew) Haarala of Farmington Hills, Mrs. Rose (Wesley) Hendrickson of Boston Loc., and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 16, 2003, at 11 A.M. in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock, with Rev. Daniel Hoard to officiate. Burial to be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests memorials to be given to the Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MI Chapter, Inc., 21311 Civic Center Drive, Southfield, MI 48076-3911.
