Obituary of Senja Maria Joki Chassell Senja Maria Joki, age 91, a former resident of Hancock Street, Chassell, passed away Thursday morning, June 7, 2007 at Portage Pointe in Hancock where she had been a resident since April 9, 2004. The former Senja Maria Sirvio was born in Ewen on September 23, 1915, a daughter of the late August and Elsa (Kinnunen) Sirvio, and had attended the local school through the 8th grade. She then helped on the family farm until she moved to Detroit. On October 16, 1943, she was united in marriage to Peter E. Joki in Detroit. In 1968 they moved to Chassell, and for over 30 years spent winters in Lake Worth, Florida. Senja had worked as a domestic helper and sales clerk in the Detroit area, and she was also employed by the Burroughs Corporation. She was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Chassell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter; six sisters, Tilda (William) Leppanen, Olga (Hubert) Anderson, Elma (Charles) Lantto, Mayme (Wayne) Estola, Sadie (Harry) Newby, and Elsie (Lauri) Lappi; and two brothers, William (Aina) Sirvio and Tauno (Lempi) Sirvio. Surviving are her sister Stella (the late Oscar) Wilson of Battle Ground, Washington Brother-in-law, Lauri Lappi of Champion Sister-in-law, Lempi Sirvio of Farmington, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews, and great great grand nieces and nephews, and many friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chassell Apostolic Lutheran Church with Bruce Estola of Ironwood and Donald Holombo of Houghton to officiating. Burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery. Friends may call at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12th and 1 hour prior to services at the church.
