Obituary of Sigrid Lassila Houghton Sigrid J. Lassila, 99, a former resident of E. Vivian St., Houghton, passed away Monday March 20, 2006, at the Woodland Heaven Wing of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility, in Hancock, where she had been a resident for the past 3 years. The former Sigrid Ruohoniemi was born on February 2, 1907, in Boston Location a daughter of the late Matt and Maria (Peltohaka) Ruohoniemi, where she resided during her youth. In 1930, she moved to Houghton, later living in the Detroit area for many years until returning to the Copper Country in 1970, to make her home back in Houghton. She was a graduate of the Houghton High School, and had attended Marquette Normal Teachers College (Northern Michigan University) in Marquette, and Wayne State University. She had taught school in Chassell for 15 years, and then in Detroit for 25 years. In 1941, she was united in marriage to Arvid "Barth" Lassila, and he preceded her in death on January 6, 1969. Mrs. Lassila was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, past choir member of the church for many years, the Suomi Kerho of the Church, the Mission Circle, past Superintendent of the Sunday School, and the E.L.C.A. Women's group. She had also been a past delegate to church conference meetings for Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Detroit, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock. Preceding her in death were 4 Sisters: Lyle Winterstein, Esther Sandquist, Saimi Ruohoniemi, & Hilda Ruohoniemi; and 2 Brother: Sanfrid Ruohoniemi & Rev. Mathias Ruohoniemi. Surviving are: Several Nieces, Nephews & Cousins Funeral services for Sigrid will be held 11 a.m. this Friday March 24, 2006, in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Revs. Susan Odegard and Jimalee Jones to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton. Friends may call at the Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
