Obituary of Stephen David Vanek Houghton Stephen D. Steve Vanek, 71, a resident of Houghton unexpectedly passed away Monday September 28, 2015, at UP Health System- Portage shortly after being admitted. Steve was born on March 11, 1944, in Menomonie, WI, a son of the late Dr. Henry and Alyce (Donovan) Vanek. Steve was a graduate of the Menomonie High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and his Masters of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin - Stout. Steve had worked in Human Resources within the Insurance Industry in Chicago for a short time before beginning a career at Michigan Technological University. He started as a Resident Counselor for the students and retiring in 1997 as the Assistant Director of the Michigan Technological University Career Center. On August 1, 1970, he was united in marriage to the former Margaret Ann Glennon of Chippewa Falls, WI. Steve was very active in the community. He was a longtime supporter of Michigan Tech Athletics, was an active member Kiwanis Club of the Copper Country, being a past president of the club and a part of the Nail Benders. He also was a past member and past president of the Hancock Rotary Club. In addition he was active in state, regional, and national professional organizations for Placement as well as Co-operative Education. Preceding him in death were his parents, two infant brothers along with his brother Timothy and sisters-in-love Donna & Barbara, his mother and father-in-love Margaret and John Glennon. Surviving are; His wife: Margaret Ann Maggie Vanek of Houghton His brothers and sisters-in-love: Richard & Jean Vanek of Ashville, NC John & Carol Vanek of Tampa, FL His 10 nieces and nephews and their families His many treasured friends A memorial service for Steve will be held 12 noon Saturday October 3, 2015, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Houghton with Rev. Bucky Beach to officiate. Friends may call on Friday October 2, 2015, from 4 to 6 pm and on Saturday from 10 am until time of services at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Houghton.
