Steven Waisanen

Houghton Steven C. Waisanen, 52, a resident of Houghton passed away Friday April 10, 2020, at UP Health – Marquette hospital following a short battle with cancer. He was born on December 23, 1967, in Lansing, MI, a son of Helmi Raaska and the late Calvin Waisanen. Steve was raised in Houghton and was a graduate of the Houghton High School and attended Northern Michigan University. Mr. Waisanen then moved to Ann Arbor area and had held several positions until returning to make his home in Houghton this past year. More recently Steve was employed with the City of Houghton in the City Transportation Department. Steven was united in marriage to Betty Fowler while residing in lower Michigan and they raised two children Ryan and Shane. Steve enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, his fantastic personality and love of sports will always be remembered. Preceding him in death were his father Calvin Waisanen, his grandparents, his uncle David Waisanen and loving extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins with whom he was very close to. Surviving are: His children: Ryan and Shane Waisanen of Bellville, MI His mother: Helmi Raaska of Ann Arbor His sisters: Elena (Idris) Sherrod of Whitmore Lake, MI And their children: Jazalyn (Lee Coval) Sherrod and their son Lee Jr., Idris Jr and Briita Maija(Sam) Oulette and their son Harrison of Houghton His aunt and uncle: Mary and Jim Michie of Mass City His aunt: Carol Waisanen of Houghton and her daughter Jody of Marquette His uncles Melvin Waisanen of Jackson, MI His aunt: Heidi Waligora Special cousins: James (Michelle) Michie, Katherine (Randy) Zahn and Emly (Sean) Foreman Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins A memorial gathering for Steve will take place at a later time and burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery of Greenland, MI. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests memorial be given to the Houghton High School Athletic Boosters club to help with the golf team or the Charity of ones choice in memory of Steven Waisanen.
