Obituary of Sulo Hiltunen Dodgeville Sulo E. Hiltunen, 84, a resident of Dodgeville, passed away Friday morning July 13, 2012, at the Omega House in Houghton following a short illness. He was born on October 2, 1927, in Dodgeville a son of the late Eric and Helmi (Stalo) Hiltunen. Sulo was raised in Dodgeville and attended the Houghton Schools. Mr. Hiltunen was a veteran having served with the United States Army during World War II. He returned to Dodgeville and worked for Nozero's Furniture in Hancock. He then worked for C&H Mining, teaching equipment use and as a Safety Supervisor. Sulo also was employed with Michigan Technological University, as a steam fitter and retiring as a supervisor at the Power Plant in 1988. On July 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth Jarvis. Mr. Hiltunen was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, active with the property committee. He enjoyed woodworking, remodeling projects, following hockey and the Green Bay Packers. Sulo was the Mine Inspector for Houghton County for 34 years. He also was a member of Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother; Bill, his sisters; Lola Rentenbach, Lila Saari, Alice Tihinen, Esther Hiltunen and Ellen Hiltunen. Surviving are: His wife: Betty Hiltunen of Dodgeville His daughter: Dorothy (Bill) Hanner of Dodgeville His grandsons: Kevin Hanner of Flagstaff, AZ and Jeffery (Heather) Hanner of Eleva, WI. His great grandchildren: Kennedy, Rylee, Carson, Paige, Brennan and Sydnee. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends Funeral service for Sulo will be held 12 noon Tuesday July 17, 2012, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. D.J. Rasner to officiate . Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock will hold military rites at the church following the funeral Tuesday. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton. Friends may call on Tuesday July 17, 2012, from 11 am until time of services at the church. In lieu of other expessions of sympathy the family suggests that memorial be given to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Little Brother's Friends of the Elderly or the charity of ones choice in memory of Sulo Hiltunen.
