Obituary of Sylvia Koski ChassellSylvia I. Koski, 90, a former resident of Chassell and Mass City passed away Thursday evening October 14, 2010, at the Omega House in Houghton following a lengthy illness.She was born on January 2, 1920, in Boston Location, a daughter of the late Eli and Jenny (Waara) Kemppainen. As a child, she resided in the Chassell area and attended elementary school in Chassell. She then moved with her family to Bruce Crossing and graduated from the Ewen High School in 1938.In 1941 she was united in marriage to Wilho Marttinen. Together they owned and operated the Marttinen Grocery Store in Mass City. In 1973 Wilho preceded her in death. Sylvia was united in marriage to Elmer Koski in 1976. The couple had resided in Chassell during the summer months and then in Port St. Lucie, FL, for the winters. In 2005 Elmer preceded Sylvia in death.Sylvia was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell. While she resided in Mass City Sylvia was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Mass City where she was active with the church choir & church council. She was an avid golfer belonging to the Wyandotte Hills Women's Golf League during the summer months and enjoyed bowling league in the winter. She always looked forward to spending time at the family cottage in Twin Lakes. Sylvia also spent time working with crafts and was proud to have made afghans for her children and grandchildren.Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, her daughter Ann Doordan and her son Kenneth Marttinen, her sister Helvie Biekkola, and her brother Wilho Kemppainen.Surviving are: Her children; Sara (Carl) Domitrovich of White PineDavid Marttinen of Denver, COHer grandchildren; Robert Domitrovich, Nicholas Domitrovich ,Ryan Doodan, Kelly Doordan, Eric Marttinen, Jenni Segovia 5 great grandchildrenHer step children; Michael Koski of Palm Springs, CASharon (Tom) Mazanec of Burnsville, MNSeveral nieces, nephews, and cousinsFuneral services for Sylvia will be held at 11 am Monday October 18, 2010, at First Lutheran Church of Winona, with Rev. Michael Laakko to officiate.
