Obituary of Taimi Miriam Maki Pelkie Taimi M. Maki, 90, a former resident of Pelkie passed away Monday evening December 28, 2009, at the Franklin House of Portage Pointe in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past year and a half. She was born on January 2, 1919, in Pelkie, a daughter of the late Jacob and Maria (Toppari) Johnson. As a child, she attended the Pelkie and Baraga Schools. Taimi had resided in Pelkie until moving to Lakeview Manor in Hancock in 2002. On June 25, 1943, she was united in marriage to George W. Maki and he preceded her in death in July of 2001. Taimi was an active member of Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie. She taught Sunday school, played the organ for church services, and helped with various women's organizations in the church. She enjoyed cooking, baking, making squeaky cheese, and gardening. Mrs. Maki was also active with the Ladies Auxiliary with the Alston VFW post. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, and her brothers; Jacob, John, Kaino, and her sisters; Laina Pelto, Esther Wuori, and Hilja Perander, and her Step-brothers; Walfred Perander, Edwin Perander, Uno Perander and Donald Perander. Surviving are: Her children; Dan (Ardys) Maki of Ahmeek Mary Jo (Mike) Wiggen of Minneapolis, MN Her grandchildren; Elise Wiggen and Joel Maki Her brother: Arne Johnson of Stockton, CA Her cousin; Ruth Beck of Marquette Numerous nieces and nephews Funeral services for Taimi will be held 11 am Saturday January 2, 2009, at Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie with Rev. John Autio to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday January 2, 2010, from 10 am until time of services at Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials may be given to Mission United Lutheran Church or to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.
