Obituary of Theodore Jaasko MR Hancock Theodore M. "Ted' Jaasko, 84, a resident of Hancock passed away Friday evening September 13, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where he had been a patient for the past two weeks. He was born in Paavola, MI, on May 9, 1929, a son of the late Theodore A. and Toini (Kuuva) Jaasko. As a child, he moved with his family to Hancock where Ted was a graduate of Hancock High School with the class of 1947. Mr. Jaasko was a veteran having served with the United States Army. Ted returned home and worked with his father as a logger before working for Thornton Contracting as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator. He then went to Michigan Technological University, where he retired as Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. In retirement, Mr. Jaasko had owned and operated Northland Battery Service in Hancock. On August 16, 1951, he was united in marriage to the former Janice Simmons and on October 7, 2004, she preceded him in death. Theodore was an active member of his community serving the City of Hancock as a Councilman and Mayor for a number of years. He was a member of Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock, member of the Copper Country Masonic Lodge in Hancock, 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Marquette, and Ahmed Shriners of Marquette, where he was a past Potentate, and F.O.E. Aerie #382 of Hancock. Ted enjoyed working on his property in Tapiola, working in his shop repairing items, going for rides with his dog, Pal and good friend George Fassbender, and visiting with the coffee crew. Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents and his step-mother, Lydia Jaasko. Surviving are: His children: Gary Jaasko of Hancock Nancy (Gerald) Paulson of Nisula His grandchildren: Heather (Larry) Biekkola of L'Anse Melissa (Mike) Loukus of Calumet Jessica Paulson of Marquette 6 great grandchildren: Lauryn, Ross, Lindsay, Mason, Thomas & Nolan His sister-in-law: Dorothy Wiitanen of Houghton His niece: Gail Salmi of Ripley Funeral services for Ted will be held 12 noon Tuesday September 17, 2013, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with Rev. David Weber to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock. Friends may call on Tuesday September 17, 2013, from 10 am until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock where Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion will hold Military Rites. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorial be given to the Copper Country Humane Society in memory of Theodore Jaasko.
