Obituary of Toivo Elmer Nerg Chassell Toivo E. Nerg, 89, a resident of Creamery Rd., Chassell, passed away Tuesday October 23, 2007, at the Omega House in Houghton where he had been a resident patient for the past 3 months. He was born on October 8, 1918 in Trimountain, a son of the late Charles and Hulda (Sormunen) Nerg. As a child, he moved with his family to the Chassell area where he attended and graduated from the Chassell School with the class of 1937. On December 24, 1943 he was united in marriage to the former Olga "Lillie" Pekkala. Toivo had worked in the CCC camps and then moved to Livonia where he worked for Excelo Company. He retired in 1980 and moved back to Chassell to make his home with his wife. Mr. Nerg was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock. Toivo enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing softball. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers: Carl Nerg and John "Fred" Nerg. Surviving are: His wife: Lillie Nerg of Chassell His brothers: Kenneth Nerg of Chassell Roy Nerg of Traverse City, MI His sister: Mildred Verhines of Irish Hills, MI Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins Funeral services for Toivo will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell with Rev. Elmer Liimatta to officiate. Burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials be given to the Omega House of Houghton.
