Valerie, E. Frea, 89, a resident of Houghton passed away peacefully Sunday, September 22, 2024, at UpJohn Heritage Nursing Home in Kalamazoo where she had been a patient for the past.

She was born on March 15, 1935, in Hancock, MI, a daughter of the late Bernard and Wendalla (Marsyala ) Demars. Valerie was raised in Houghton and was a graduate of the Houghton High School. Valerie attended Finlandia University before receiving her teaching degree from Northern Michigan University.

She was united in marriage to Ward John Frea and the couple made their home in Houghton while raising their family. The couple parted as friends and Valerie began a career working as a real estate agent.

Mrs. Frea was a member of Hope Fellowship Church locally, she enjoyed time outdoors, biking, and cross-country skiing. She loved going for walks in the blizzards and rain storms of the UP.

Preceding her in death were her parent along with her sister Janet Martin.

Several nieces, nephews and cousins

A private graveside service for Valerie is tentatively planned for the summer of 2025, in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.
