Obituary of Violet Morin The Morin family lost a treasure.Violet "Vi" May Morin, 91, passed away on Dec. 15 at the Omega House in Houghton, where she had resided for the past three months.A lifelong Houghton resident, Vi was born July 6, 1918, to the late George and Edith (Moyle) Fillbrook. Vi married Jack L. Rogers in 1938. Following his death during World War II, she was united in marriage to Francis D. Morin on May 31, 1945; Fran passed away on Jan. 10, 1995.Any person Vi didn't know was just a friend in the making, and any friend was simply a member of the family. Her home on Baraga Avenue was the family hub where people met to talk, to laugh and to cry together - and her kitchen and front porch were command central.Vi's baked offerings - from cinnamon bread to peanut butter cookies to pasties (always in batches of at least 100), let her put love and support on a tray or into a tin. Many of her grandchildren's - and great-grandchildren's and great-great-grandchildren's - earliest memories revolve around Vi's big green pasty bowl, her flour drawer and her spice rack.Vi was "Grandma" to the entire neighborhood, and babysat for generations of Houghton residents. Few people passed her front door without stopping in to say hello and to revel in her outpouring of affection. For many years, they were greeted by one of Vi's constant canine companions; her love of dogs was life-long, and she was always happiest with a furry friend curled up on her lap.Vi's sense of humor was legendary - as the matriarch of a family of comics, she might pretend to be scandalized by a joke, but would still laugh until she cried, and until everyone around her dissolved into giggles too.Preceding her in death were her husbands, daughter Barbara Lucchesi, great-grandson Jason Jaehnig, brothers Glen and John, twin sister Edith Lucchesi, and son-in-law Edward Samuelson.Surviving Vi are her children - son-in-law Ace Lucchesi of Houghton; daughter Betty Samuelson of Houghton; daughter Joan (Michael) Flynn of University Place, WA; and son Don (Maureen) Morin of Houghton - 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her brother and sister in-law, Bill (Marilyn) Rodgers of Watersmeet, MI.A memorial mass of Christian burial for Violet will be held Friday, Dec. 18 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church (Houghton). Father John Martignon will officiate. Friends may call on Dec. 18 from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery.Memorials may be made to the Omega House or Aspirus Home Health and Hospice in memory of Vi Morin. To view Vi's obituary or send to send condolences to the family, please visit www.memorialchapel.net.The Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock has assisted the family with the arrangements.Service Information To send flowers to the family of Violet Morin, please visit Tribute Store
