Obituary of Waino Fredrick Jaaskela Sturgeon River Waino F. Jaaskela, 96, a resident of Sturgeon River passed away early Tuesday morning August 28, 2007, at the Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where he had been a resident patient for the past six weeks. Waino was born on March 26, 1911, in Salo, a son of the late William and Hilma (Hiltunen) Jaaskela. As a child he moved with his family to the Sturgeon River District where he attended the Sturgeon River School. Growing up Waino helped with the family farm tending to cattle and making wood by the moonlight. Mr. Jaaskela was a proud veteran having served with the United States Army during World War II under General Patton, with the 133 engineers. After the war Waino moved to the Detroit where he had worked for General Motors as a machinist, retiring after 30 years. Waino was a member of Rangers Post #6165 V.F.W. of South Range and a former member of the Finnish Center while he resided in the Detroit area. Preceding him in death were his brothers: Toivo, William "Bill", Ivar, Albert, and Edward; his sister: Ingrid Jarvi, and 2 nephews; Rudy and Richard Jarvi. Surviving are: His nieces: Lillian Jarvi of Reedley, CA Marian Thompson of St. Charles, MO Several cousins in Canada Several great nieces, and great nephews. A private service for Waino will be held at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock Tuesday September 4, 2007, with Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton. Where Rangers Post #6165 V.F.W. of South Range will hold military rites. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorial may be given to Cypress Manor Nursing Home of Hancock or the American Cancer Society in memory or Waino F.
