Obituary of William Butler MR Laurium William R. Butler, 72, a resident of Laurium, passed away peacefully Tuesday February 11, 2014, at the Delaware House of Portage Pointe in Hancock. He was born on May 5, 1941, in El Cajon, CA, a son of the late Rutherford and Mabel (Powers) Butler. As a child, he moved a few times before his family settled in Lower Michigan where he graduated from Farmington Hills High School with the class of 1959. Mr. Butler was a veteran having served with the United States Air Force being stationed in Turkey. Bill graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1973 with a Bachelors of Science in Education. He came to the Copper Country to work for the Intermediate School District. He then began a career with the Calumet School District, teaching in the elementary school with most of his career in the middle school as a special education teacher, retiring in the 1997, after 24 years. In retirement, Bill worked for a short time at Nisula's Green House and the Calumet IGA. On August 5, 1978, he was united in marriage to the former Dorene Murphy. William was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church of Hancock. He was a wonderful caregiver to his beloved wife Dorene for many years. He also enjoyed the outdoors hunting, fishing, gardening and boating. Preceding him in death were his parents, his infant sister Marjorie, his brother Malcolm and niece Debbie Gross. Surviving are: His wife: Dorene Butler a resident of Delaware House at Portage Pointe His daughter: Nicole Butler of Laurium His brothers: Virgil (Joanne) Butler of Cadillac, MI Ron Butler of Traverse City, MI His sister-in-law: Daisy Butler of Traverse City, MI Several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services for William will be held 11 am Saturday February 15, 2014, at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Hancock with Pastor Scott Lutz to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday February 15, 2014, from 10 am until time of services at the church. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to the MS Society or the American Diabetes Association in memory of William R. Butler.
